value dimensions by Hofstede as well as other cultural dimensions, as shown in
Exhibit 3-3.
Based on a synthesis of Hofstede's research and other cluster studies, Ronen and Shenkar developed eight country clusters grouped according to the similarities found in those studies of employee attitudes toward (1. the importance of work goals, (2. need fulfillment and job satisfaction, (3. managerial and organizational variables, and (4. work role and interpersonal orientation.28 These country clusters are shown in Exhibit 3-4. In addition, per capita gross national product (GNP) at that time (1985. was used to determine placement in the figure, with the most highly developed countries close to the center. This may indicate some relationship between a country's level of development and its generally accepted values and attitudes, although the variables are too complex to draw conclusions about any direction of causality among them.
