According to Forbes (1999., Softbank has invested $2.4 billion in 100 Internet, technology, communications, and computer publislung companies. As of July 1999, the total market value of these companies surpassed $14 billion. In many companies, Sofibank became one of the major investors (see Exhibit C5-6.. Softbank's venture capital subsidiary (Softbank Technology Ventures) has provided $906 million to many internet firms in the United States and Japan. Analysts believe that Softbank has plans to invest $1.2 billion in the coming months to seek additional acquisitions and new Internet start-ups. As of September 1999, Softbank held 7% to 8% ownership in the Internet and e-commerce industry worldwide. Soft- bank's Internet and technology acquisitions fall into two categories. First, in the area of media and marketing, Softbank owns 70 percent of Ziff-Davis, Inc., which is the largest computer trade show company in the world. Ziff-Davis publishes computer maga zines such as PC Magazine, PC Week, and Corn puter Shopper. Second, in the internet, communications, and technology sectors, Soitbank has invested in some of the top Internet brands; i.e., Yahoo, Yahoo Japan, E-Trade Group, E-Loan, Concentric, USWeb, Message Media, and Asymetrix Learning Systems. These acquisitions have placed Softbank among the top Internet and technology players in the world.
A quick look at Softbank's global strategy reveals two areas. First, Softbank is the main Internet and communications company in the world. This was achieved by acquiring some of the strategic Internet brands in the world markets. Second, Softbank plans to get out of the computer publishing business and will start refocusing on the Internet and e-commerce areas. This could be attributed to high growth in the Internet and c-commerce industry Although risky in nature, this long-term strategic move by Softbank carries an excellent market share and will place it among the top Internet companies in Japan and other markets. Very few Japanese companies have pursued this kind of risky growth strategy in the Internet and c-commerce areas.
